Kevin - from the multitude of bikes i've had, I rate the standard stock shocks/springs on my 96 to be outstanding. It may change over the long term but for now with only about 3400 miles on the bike they work superbly. I weigh 195-200 (I tend to pork out throughout the winter months) and riding single the first spring position is fine. If I do a little riding in the twisties the second position is fine. Third position is chosen when my wife rides with me. Right now this fits my needs fine. As the spring weakens I imagine everything will need to be notched up one click. Usually it is the stock shock that gives out first. When it goes you usually know it. That is when its best to go aftermarket. My advice is to stay with the stock as long as it is giving good service.
